Olokun worship carries historical significance, particularly in coastal and riverine areas where water symbolizes both livelihood and spirituality. The deity is often associated with prosperity, abundance, and the provision of children, which are central values in African communities. Priests and priestesses of Olokun have long conducted rituals involving water, white chalk, and sacred objects as means of invoking blessings or healing (Awolalu & Dopamu, 1979). The advent of Christianity in Africa introduced a competing religious system that challenged traditional structures. Missionaries often condemned deities like Olokun as idols or manifestations of evil, seeking to eradicate them from the spiritual consciousness of converts (Peel, 2000). Yet, conversion to Christianity rarely entailed a complete abandonment of indigenous traditions.
